Davis Appeal Seen
Mr. Davis, they say. with his moderate conservatism and his background as a successful investment banker, would likely have considerable appeal for the financial community which, in the final analysis, controls the political purse strings in this age of multimillion dollar campaigns.
Similarly, his record of compassionate and progressive service as mayor of Portsmouth would give him acceptable credentials with various constituent groups which make up the core of the Democratic party.
Although Mr. Davis speaks of his prospective candidacy in highly tentative terms, there is not much doubt he sides with the optimists in their appraisal of his chances. If the conditions imposed by his personal situation can be met, there is also not much doubt he would accept the convention's nomination.
But drafts, of course, do not just happen. They have to be carefully orchestrated by delicate political engineering. That process is reported to be well underway.
Indeed, that huffing and puffing sound you hear may be that of Davis supporters around the state as they try to start the draft winds blowing.
And, in the view of Capitol observers, at the week’s end the breeze they were kicking up appeared pretty brisk.
