Lasi year's (1981) small grain yields were good throughout the stale and there were some exceptional yields reported in the Virginia small grain yield contest. Leslie and Wilford Poore, father-and-son farming team from Amelia, were stale champion barley producers with 143 bushels per acre. The Poores planted on Sept. 29, two and one-half bushels per acre of certified Barsov barley. They averaged 109 bushels per acre in the 53-acre field from which the two-acre contest plot was harvested. The Virginia average barley yield is 61 bushels per acre.
Wheal yields were also above average in 1981 with another record yield entered in ihe contest. Garland Morris of Amelia County grew 98 bushels per acre of Coker 747 wheat. He seeded one and one-half bushels per acre of certified seed in midOctober. Since soil fertility was high, fall fertilizer was not applied. Sixty pounds of nitrogen was applied in February. Morris averaged 90 bushels per acre in the ten acre field from which the two contest acres were harvested.
