Other animals keep me company. Vireos, thrushes, indigo buntings, and scarlet tanagers sing from the wooded slopes below me. Ravens glide along the bare ridge, sometimes approaching from behind and startling me with their abrupt croaky calls. Waves of swallows fly overhead. A mouse — or something — rustles underneath the reindeer moss at my feet. Butterflies fly by so quickly that they are hard to identify but three that hang around are a wood nymph, a redspotted purple, and an Aphrodite fritillary. Ants and flies are pesky here but easily tolerated after those persistent mosquitoes I left below.
The sun is scorching hot on these rocks. It is so hot that 1 feel a little sick. Not at all hungry at lunchtime, il you can believe that, bul force myself to eat a little. It is hot but 1 want to sit on the rocks awhile. There are thunderheads and rumbling; all around and I may have tc seek shelter quickly. One
