plant is cinnamon fern. Their fronds, when held straight up, are taller than I am. I have camped here before, and find the place very appealing and n.asonably accessible. I found a little spring just a few hundred yards below, which I dug out and dammed up — after it settles it should be a good water supply. A smoky campfire tonight might discourage the mosquitoes.
1 flushed a barred owl from the hemlocks on the way up. That reminded me of my last trip here. It was a frosty October night, and I was alone and exuberant to be in such a private, idyllic place. I had a sudden compulsion to let out a loud, joyous whoop — which I did in mock imitation of a barred owl. Almost immediately, to my surprise there were two barred owls in the tree above me, responding to my call! They were invisible in the darkness but entertained me well into the night with their wild, insane, quavering screams.
Bear Dumplings
After pitching the tent today 1 discovered a pile of “dumplings" — as an octogenarian friend has called them — which appeared to be fresh bear sign. I had set up camp on a bear trail! Well, I wasn’t sure it was bear droppings so 1 decided to chance it and camp by the marsh anyway. I bent over a birch sapling, tied my food bag onto it, and let it spring back. Now all mv food is
