Deal's Backbone

Highland County, Va. Dear Kaye, Cindy, and Sherry,

1 am writing this from a CAVE! Actually, it’s not a bona fide, water-carved limestone cave, but a deep, dark recess in the oblique shelf-like rocks on Devil’s Backbone. Thanks to this convenient shelter 1 am protected from lightning and rain in the middle (altitudinally speaking) of a Highland County thunderstorm.

The weather seems always unstable here. Twenty minutes ago it was blazing hot — probably 100 degrees on top of the rocks just over my head. Now there’s a cold rain and wind. Dozens of flies and a few mosquitoes share my shelter. There’s a little waterfall in front of us, from all the runoff from the exposed rock face.

1 had a tough time getting started on this vacation. From Rappahannock County, I drove all the way to Harrisonburg and realized I’d forgotten a box with all my essentials: binoculars, maps, etc. 1 drove back home and got there at 11 P.M. My truck is still misfiring, backfiring, and oil-burning terribly, and it didn’t need the extra mileage. (Neither did I.) But it was necessary. I’ve never been so scatterbrained in my life.

This morning I was on the road at 6:30 and 3 hours later parked the truck near Blue Grass, Va. At noon 1 made my campsite at a nice ferny glade which you’ll hear about. After scrambling up
