Miller is one of the few opticians in the state who can make up a prescription lens on the premises. This he does with an assortment of unbelievably "smart” machines, machines that grind and polish factory-made blanks, German-made machines that do edging and finishing, machines with diamonds for cutters and computers for brains.
Along with the machines. Front Royal Optical employs three full-time and one parttime local persons.
Miller learned his trade in the days before there was a formal curriculum. Opticians served an apprenticeship, working four years with a master optician until they mastered the separate skills involved in fitting and preparing prescription lenses. Now there are courses available for anyone wanting to learn this exacting profession.
