climbed up, but decided to continue sideways. Here the footholds became slippery and uncertain, and the handholds weren t altogether adequate either. I decided to go back towards the break in the rock. As I shifted my weight, I became a little dizzy from the height, and prayed for my life. It’s the only time I’ve ever done that. Suddenly 1 wanted to be around a while longer and tackle all those little problems I had left at home.
I managed to inch my way back to the little gap, grabbed the birch tree, and swung myself up on top of the rock. I was a little shaky and sat there for a while.
But the worst was yet to come. I saw no way along the west side, and thought I saw a way down to the east, the direction I wanted to go. But the lower I got, the slicker and steeper it became. There was a thick row of trees just below me, but I couldn’t see what was below that, so if I slid down to the trees I might have become stranded there.
So there I was, sprawled on the angled rock face, hugging it for the greatest possible friction, darkness approaching and thunder rumbling all around. I spent lots of time motionless, just searching for little crevices that might hold hand or foot. I was there because the dangers behind me had seemed greater than the possible ones ahead.
