Treacherous Climb
Two hours later: The rains have stopped and I'm back on the rocks. This storm, which 1 just watched flashing over Monterey Mountain to the south, was the head of a cold front. I've been picking my way southward along the sharp edge of the outcrop, shivering from the cold and fruitlessly trying to avoid brushing the wet vegetation. A while ago, I could confidently walk along these rocks. Now it’s really treacherous. The rainwater has swelled the lichens on the rocks and everything's perilously slick. I don’t know much about the geology here, but whatever this rock is, it's unpredictably crumbly. More than once, rocks I was using as hand-holds almost gave way.
