Looking at a roster only seven names long would give most coaches a terminal case of apprehension but Teresa McLawhorn. mentor of Rappahannock’s Lady Panthers, is cautiously optimistic.

She can joke about Rappahannock’s long suit certainly not lying in bench strength and then get on with assessing her team’s positive points. “As soon as they get 4 used to playing together! they’re going to be A-okay,rt McLawhorn emphasized with conviction.

The squad has a nucleus of three returning letterwomen from last year: Melissa Turner. Ann Tupper and Kim Settle. Tupper has ‘‘really, really improved and she’ll do a lot for us this year." said the coach. The junior forward is “smart, quick and really on the ball.” she added. Kim Settle, joined by Donna Atkins from last year’s junior varsity contingent. will give the Panthers quickness at guard positions.
