Devil’s Backbone

Highland County, Va. Dear Jeannie,

I have resolved to write many letters during this 2week excursion. Maybe the Rappahannock News will publish some of them. 1 wanted to write to you first, so you will hear about my campsite on Devil’s Backbone, the first point of interest on my trip. As I sat down to write this, the mosquitoes became unbearable and forced me to move on to the breezy ridgetop, so 1 will treat you with a description of that as well.

This is a pretty, shady, damp level spot in very rugged country. The land is privately owned. My campsite is what might be called a “glade” — a marshy open area surrounded by woodlands. The dominant
