kids had to go for the whole vocational curriculum or the whole academic routine. There is no in-between.”
Davis said that the school has been used, particularly the computer facilities, by academic students from other schools. “We can set it up however they want,” he said. “We can have a student come in one day a week or whatever arrangement fits his schedule.” Davis said that the Rappahannock high school has not yet taken advantage of this possibility.
Both Bodine and Davis pointed out that there’s not such a gap between vocational and academic education as the separate facilities approach seems to emphasize. “Everyone will leave here with a practical goal accomplished. This is not just theory,” Bodine said. For instance, he said, the health students will be certified in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Drafting students will have completed two mechanical drawings, a map or plat and a simple house plan-accomplishments that will be useful whether the students go on to become architects or just homeowners.
Typing students will leave knowing how to type, food service students will have produced desserts worthy of a professional baker, and those enrolled in the two-week fashion course will have created additions
