ryte tootlers and drum beaters, painted clowns and costumed dancers, horse-drawn buggies and bicycles festooned with red, white and blue bunting, craftspeople and flea market venders, all will crowd the streets of Washington as the town celebrates America’s independence with its traditional Fourth of July country fair.
This year, festivities will also include special observances of Rappahannock County’s 150th anniversary.
The streets will open at 10 a.m., Monday, July 4th. To date, craftspeople reserving space include a glass blower, sheep skin designer, potters and weavers. Treasures from the attic will be offered at Trinity Episcopal Church’s annual white elephant sale and the Rappahannock County Library will hold its traditional book sale. In addition, flea market venders will peddle their wares at booths along Gay Street.
Washington’s volunteer fire and rescue workers, who organize the Fourth of July event each year as the department’s major fund raiser, report that attractions will also include a model train exhibit, a petting zoo, pony and buggy rides and rides on a big mechanical swing brought down from the mountain for the day by the firemen from Chester Gap.
