dent. After he became superintendent in 1923, enrollment grew to over 80 boys and girls. Mr. C. B. was like a father to most of the children in the church, taking packs of youngsters camping on a week’s outing in the summer to Massanutten Springs. Those that were able paid 50 cents for board and lodging on the trips. Mr. C. B. and his wife Mary paid for those who couldn’t. “They wouldn’t let anyone stay home because of lack of money,” said Mrs. Cary Thornhill, herself a member of Mt. Lebanon since she was 15 years old.
Mr. C. B. recalled the very first outing to summer camp when the Thornhills’ daughter was part of the entourage. “She got up at 2 a.m. and had everything in apple pie order to leave for the week...And I remember the Rudacill girl. Someone put tin cans with gravel under her bed tied to a string. They pulled the string and it made an awful noise. She came out of that bed with
