“This July 4th will mark the 207th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence announced by the Contintental Congress in Philadelphia after months of deliberations on July 4, 1776,” Mr. Carrigan noted, in inviting the public to Avon Hall for the patriotic program. Benjamin Franklin, asked by the waiting crow d what manner of government the Congress decided on, responded, ‘A Republic, if you can keep it.’ It is a time to look at our country and wonder if it is the ‘Republic’ Ben Franklin envisioned.
“This year, Washington’s Fourth of July is a double feature that also celebrates the 150th birthday of Rappahannock County,” Mr. Carrigan continued: “We must stop and consider both where Rappahannock has been and what we must do to turn it over to the next generations a little better than it was when we came to it.”
