. The county was petitioned October 1 by the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies, which claimed only five percent of Virginia’s counties continue not to conform to mandated animalwelfare laws. The petition, which is a first step to have the situation resolved in court, still is pending.
The supervisors announced in December plans to upgrade facilities on the property of Animal Warden Jack Bruce as a temporary measure until an animal-shelter site, possibly combined with a landfill site, can be secured.
Number 7: Jail completion. Completed remodeling of the county jail, which became totally operational in March, made for improvements in law enforcement capabilities, says Rappahannock Sheriff John Henry Woodward, who was sworn in the first of the year.
Although final cost reports for 1984 were not completed at the time of this report, Sheriff Woodward believes the county will save money in some areas such as reduction of transportation costs among counties, which was necessary prior to holding prisoners in the county.
