It is the New York Times/CBS National Poll. That poll found, according to the Times, and, I assume, according to CBS, that President Reagan failed to obtain a mandate in that election.
If Presidents do need a mandate, as the former vice president said, possibly as medieval kings needed a falcon or two, (and evidently Saudi Arabian princes do, if the reports of their being willing to pay as much as $100,000 for a female gyrfalcon are true) to sustain their royal egos, and the ldng of Ethiopia, a brace of lions on golden chains, as evidence of regal power, than President Reagan may be in trouble. He may be in the position of the tenderfoot, holding the bag in the snipe hunt, waiting for the beaten, who have in fact gone off to bed or to a tavern, to drive the snipe into hia waiting bag.
Although TIME/CB8 have not reported the results of polling on the matters of aura, consensus, and agenda, the less scientific experts generally agree that the president has a ■lightly warm aura, a vague consensus—barely intact, like a high cloud— and a "residual agenda.”
