“We surely do miss Mr. Latham,” said Ron Frazier. “Other than his family, I feel that you best knew Mr. Latham and the type of man he was and the type of decisions he would make,” he told the supervisors. “It’s in the best interests of Jackson District and the county as a whole to return a conservative minded individual to the board,” Mr. Frazier said, asking that A1 Henry be appointed.
“I appreciate your trying to give us a representative as soon as possible,” said Vickie Eastham. Noting that the board members are chosen through the democratic process by a majority of the district residents, she maintained that “the closest Jackson District can come at this time to a majority candidate is Mr. Zindel.”
In 1983, he “canvassed the district, he took time to listen to our concerns and he told us what his positions were . . . This is supposed to be elected representation, and the best you can do now to follow that is to appoint Mr. Zindel,” Mrs. Eastham told the supervisors. She pointed out that Mr. Zindel fell just five votes short of a majority when ballots were cast in 1983 “without pressure, without someone saying, ‘Here's my petition. Sign it!’ ”
