To the editor:
I was sorry to see the enthusiasm the so-called “gift” of computers by the electric company to the Rappahannock school system generated in your editorial. Seymour Papert, the MIT genius who designed the computer language LOGO, has warned of the potential danger to children who are taught to use computers, feeling that it can impede normal relationships with adults and other children. He said that “throwing children and computers together without understanding what is going on is playing with fire.”
The Bible in Revelations says that the false prophet will speak “as a dragon,” and will eventually control the economy to such a degree that “no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark ... of the beast.” And it is a fact that the internal digital language of computers - the binomial system of zeroes and ones - was derived from Libnitz from the yang and yin lines of the I Ching, an ancient Chinese oracle which was said to be created by the first emperor of China, Fu Hsi. . . who was, according to the myth, a dragon!
In essence, the Unit Price Code, the pin-striped bar-code on nearly all consumer items, and the I Ching hexagrams are alike. And many others have seen the danger in an economy using the UPC “mark of the beast,” seeing it as a forerunner of the Revelations prophecy. The UPC is also dragon words.
Phillip G. Zimbardo, a professor of psychology at Stanford, writing on “Hackers Syndrome” - the tendency to get very involved in computers - says that “It has been shown to be a central agent in the etiology of depression, paranoia, schiz- ophrenia, rape, suicide, mass murder, and a wide variety of disease states.” He says that “there is no dearth of research, anecdotes, and observations demonstrating the pervasiveness of the disorder.”
It is interesting too that LOGO (Word of the Dragon) is being pushed in the schools at the same time that Logos (Word of God) is being expelled!
