Mrs. Leonard selected the Rappahannock County Garden Club to administer the fund. Each year the club provides scholarship grants to deserving high school graduates living in the county. The first scholarship was awarded to Nancy Deal of Sperryville in the modest sum of $300. The grant has increased in value over the years. In 1982, it reached $1,000 and two technical college grants of $600 each were awarded. The dollar amounts of the various grants vary depending on the total funds available each year.
In order to be eligible, a student must meet the following criteria:
• Resident of Rappahannock County.
• High school graduate the year of application.
• Financial need.
• Reason for wishing to continue his or her education.
• Acceptance at an accredited school.
• Signatures of three adult Rappahannock County residents, excluding relatives and school personnel.
• Signatures of a teacher and the principal.
In order to determine how the grants had helped the recipient further their education and what they were presently doing, a question* naire was sent to each recipient. After quite an exhaustive search all recipients were traced and the questionnaires tabulated in chronological order.
Here are the recipients and their responses:
1968 Nancy Deal (now Taylor): Attended Monroe Business College in Middletown for two years and is presently employed as a Park Ranger (Dispatch) in the Resource Management and Visitor Protection Division of the National Park Service in Luray.
1969 Wayne Deal: Graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and is manager of a Food Lion store in Greensboro, N.C.
1970 Jane Kilby (now Meier):N Graduated from Radford University and is teaching third grade in Culpeper County. Jane has taken graduate work at Radford.
1971 Christine Fox (now Hall): Graduated from James Madison University (JMU) and received a bachelor of science degree in art education. She has received her teacher’s certificate in history since graduation and is employed at the Rockingham District Court.
