bids again but when the catering contract was first advertised four years ago, the Hampton Inn was the sole bidder, the sheriff pointed out. “The catch is that it’s seven days a week, three meals a day at specific times,” he said, explaining why there’s limited interest. And the caterer must be nearby “or else there’s a problem keeping the food warm,” Sheriff Woodward added.
Looking at the alternative of onsite meals, he reported that fuhds are available for jail construction, renovation and enlargement, with the state providing 80 percent and the county responsible for 20 percent of a project’s cost. That same split also applies to furnishings and equipment. “There’s building going on all over the state. They spend that money, no matter whether we get it or not.”
Sheriff Woodward posed the possibility of a three-floor addition to the jail, to include a “drunk tank” in the basement, kitchen on the ground floor and additional offices on the top floor. With office space “very scarce,” his department is using two rooms in the building which also houses the Commissioner of Revenue’s office, Sheriff Woodward said. “And I’d like to see a drunk tank in the basement. Now I’ve got them in with the general jail population, and they keep the rest of the prisoners up all night.”
