In many instances, treatment for poisoning begins with causing the victim to throw up the offending substance. “The safest and most effective agent to induce vomiting in children is syrup of ipecac,” says Dr. William Cook, chairman of the Accident and Poison Prevention Committee of the Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. ■' A recent study conducted by poison and medical centers in Virginia, Maryland and D.C. found that syrup of ipecac could be administered safely at home to infants as young as six months, providing recommendations of a poison specialist or physician were followed.
“Since some substances such as lye, petroleum products, furniture polish, camphor, lighter fluids or paint products may cause more damage coming up than staying down,” Dr. Cook cautions parents and child guardians to “be sure to call a physician or poison center the minute you suspect a poisonous product may have been swallowed.”
In case of a suspected poisoning, parents are advised to call the Emergency Department of their local hospital or the Blue Ridge Poison Center (804-924-5543, call collect) which are staffed around the clock.
