zone mileage charges by five percent. Following that, on July 1, area long distance rates were lowered for all customers. Altogether, those reductions exceeded $2.2 million.

Centel has not asked for a general rate increase since 1983, according to Ms. Wells. She added that with the latest decrease, the company’s local service rates have fallen to their lowest level since 1982.

Front Royal one-party residential customers will see their basic local service rate decrease frbm $10.62 to $10.46^ per month. Meanwhile, the reduction for customers in the Washington exchange will be from $8.70 to $8.58 monthly.

AT&T announced it has lowered interstate long-distance prices by a total of $772 million beginning at midnight, Dec. 31.

Overall prices for AT&T Long Distance Service have been reduced by 3.5 percent. Based on an average monthly interstate residential bill of $9, the average consumer will save about 21 cents or 2.4 percent with AT&T.

With this reduction, AT&T will have reduced its long-distance prices by nearly 36 percent since Jan. 1, 1984.

The price reduction is based on lower charges AT&T will pay to local telephone companies for access to customers’ lines.

The largest of the reductions will occur during the daytime calling period, with smaller decreases occurring in evening and night/weekend calling periods.
