Dr. Fanner indicated Virginia’s livestock sector shaved mixed recovery during 1987^ while many of the crop sectors continued to struggle. He emphasized that even though farm income is up somewhat this year, many of Virginia’s farmers, especially those highly leveraged cash grain producers, continue to be under financial stress.

For Virginia agriculture, 1988 is expected to be somewhat better than 1987. According to Farmer, the best measure of overall profitability for Virginia’s farm economy is net farm income and this is expected to increase about 8 percent in 1988 over 1987. For the past few years, the livestock sectors have benefited from weak and declining prices in the crop sectors.
