Joan H. Munford knows that the proposed “family life” curricmdm faces some tough and vocal opposition. . ^

The Democratic delegate from Blacksburg, along with Sen. Joseph V. Gartlan Jr. (D-Alexandria), persuaded the General Assembly during the 1987 legislative session to instruct the state Board of Education to develop a “model” sexual education curriculum for public schools.

The board recently voted 7-2'to V send the controversial curriculum to the General Assembly to consider during its 1988 session, which opens Jan. 13.

Though some lawmakers and citizens have criticized the state school board’s proposal, Del. Munford said she has “no idea” what the General Assembly wall do with the curriculum.

Cpl. Cooper

in exercise

Marine Lance Cpl. Kenneth W. Cooper, sob of Truman H. and Helen M. Cooper of Route 2, Amissville, recently participated in Exercise Spanish Phiblex 2-87 while serving with 22nd Marine Amphibious Unit, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

During the exercise Cpl. Cooper participated in joint air and surface assaults, followed by cross-training ashore with Spanish. Naval infantrymen. He also participated in small unit training, along with crewserved weapons live-fire exercises.

Cpl. Cooper is currently participating in a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea, conducting operations with NATO allies.

Marine Sgt. Richard S. Stephaniuk, son of Nancy Taylor of Route 1, Castleton, recently received a Letter of Appreciation in recognition of his outstanding performance while stationed at Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, Arizona.

A 1974 graduate of Auburn High School, Auburn, N.Y., he joined the Marine Corps in June 1974.
