Earnings limit unfair
Recently in the House of Representatives I testified before a research committee on the need to repeal the unfair Social Security earnings limitation test.
This requirement is an unfair treatment of our working elderly who are willing and able to supplement their income with extra earnings. The test creates high tax rates on the working elderly over age 65 who are trying to supplement their Social Security retirement income.
This earnings limitation sends a very negative message to our nation’s senior citizens — that their contributions to our economy are no longer needed or wanted after a certain age, an age determined by the Federal govemnlent.
I believe the Congress should encourage, not discourage, elderly Americans to provide for their own livelihood to the best of their ability if they choose to do so.
I hope we will be successful in our efforts to repeal this unfair law.
