Mason Carbaugh, Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), describes Virginia’s farm
j economy in 1987 as a mixed one, with signs of slight income recovery despite a drought and a continuation of weak cash grain prices.
Commissioner Carbaugh made this observation Dec. 16 during a meeting of the Board of Agriculture and Consunjef Services.
At the board meeting, Dr. Berkwood M. Farmer, VDACS chief economist, presented the agricultural forecast for Virginia’s farm economy based on the state’s econometric model. Dr. Farmer stated that the total farm income in 1987 is expected to exceed $2 billion, up $8 million from 1986.
