In addition to determining whether the substance swallowed is toxic and of sufficient quantity to be harmful, physicians and poison center specialists must evaluate if the substance is' one that can be safely regurgitated.
The study, in which the Blue Ridge, National Capital and Maryland poison centers participated, also found that having to purchase ipecac at the pharmacy or obtain it from a hospital sometimes resulted in treatment delays of over an hour. Noting how highly stressful a poisoning incident is for most parents, Scott Wiley, manager of the Blue Ridge Poison Center at UVA, cautions them to keep the bottle of ipecac in an easily remembered location. He added that “the parent who has ipecac readily available and is able to act promptly when advised may not only speed treatment but save a harried trip to the hospital.” Of course, he said, it should be stored where children cannot get hold of it accidentally.
