RCHS sophomore Elizabeth Oliver was judged the winner in the Amissville Ruritans* recent contest to write an essay oh the theme of the Constitution’s bicentennial. She was presented a $100 savings bond by Col. Ellis Bingham, chairman of the club’s Patriotism Committee.
Roy Alther, also a sophomore at RCHS, took second place.
“We’re pleased to sponsor this award,’’ Col. Bingham said. “And we’re glad to see the interest of our young people in studying and learning about the Constitution, especially as it enters its third hundred years.”
RCHS, Social Studies teacher Jeanne Griffin served as RCHS sponsor for the contest. The essays were judged by three members of the staff of Congressman D. French Slaughter Jr. (R-Va.). Kirsten Fedewa, the congressman’s press secretary, George White, his chief aide, and Jane Clatterbuck, his district representative in Culpeper, said that they found the choice of a winder extremely difficult. ’ “The consensus was that we were pleased that the students are interested in learning about the Constitution — especially with the bicentennial observance,” Ms. Fedewa said. ' She added that all three judges Svere “glad to see the return to basics -— the essay — and that students are interested and willing to participate.” - The essays presented “fresh ideas,” Ms. Fedewa said, “and it was 3m enormous pleasure, to judge Jhem.” - Mr. White agreed, noting that “as I talk with students, I stress the need for education. One of the underlying themes of the Constitution Is the need for an educated population. An essay contest is helpful in that.”
Ms. Fedewa also said that 1988 is the observance of the 200th anniversary of the ratification of the ConstiJtutioftiSrL which Virginia figured prominentlyT" She suggested that ■ could perhaps be used as the theme «f the club’s next essay contest. > Col. Bingham said that the club [plans to continue its sponsorship, ;and said that details of the next amplest will be available later through Ihe Amissville Ruritan Club and at -the high school. He thanked RCHS rPrincipal John Toth and Ms. Griffin, I who coordinated the contest at the :!ugh school.
