As this is the bicentennial year of our Constitution, it is a good time to think about the thoughts and ideas that have shaped the growth of our country. The Constitution is a radical experiment that has provided tfie framework of our government tjar two hundred years. y
This framework was designed after seven years using the Articles of Confederation, our original form of government. The Articles were long on independence but not much else. Each state was a separate entity and the central government had virtually no power. It soon became ap^ parent that this system would not work and a new, stronger central government mjist be set up. However, when the delegates from the thirteen states met in Philadelphia they were faced with a dilemma that took them months to solve. How could they endorse a strong central government that might once again suppress all the rights they had fought so hard to gain?
