He visited Rappahannock County last week, holding a town meeting at the courthouse on Wednesday. Although the federal government was closed due to snow on Friday, the congressman was in his office and interviewed by telephone by the Rappahannock News.
“The budget is the number one question to be determined ... as to whether we are able to make progress on deficit reduction . . . reach a balanced budget within a few years.”
“I was disappointed by much of the budget process during 1987,” he said. In a move which has been widely condemned by both liberals and conservatives, an appropriations bill was passed on the last day of the 1987 session.
