In the downstairs group home setting, chores are assigned, with assignments rotating every two weeks. The system is tightly structured, each job broken down step by step in a “task analysis” or TA, to borrow Goldsborough House lingo.
The TA for preparing dinner begins with washing hands and checking the week’s menu posted on the kitchen bulletin board. If the night’s meal is hot dogs, french fries, and green beans, the TA goes on to (1) take hot dogs from the refrigerator, (2) get out pot, (3) fill pot with water, (4) put hot dogs in pot, (5) put pot on stove, (6) turn stove on medium, (7) turn oven to 400 degrees, (8) get french fries from freezer, (9) get out cookie sheet, put french fries on cookie sheet, (10) put cookie sheet in oven, (11) get can of green beans from pantry and so on through serving the plates and putting the plates on the table.
Their TAs are equally as detailed for every other skill necessary for a modicum of independence. They must learn to navigate Culpeper’s busy streets, showing that they can cross properly with the lights at four, corners. After they’ve done this perfectly four or five times under a counselor’s watchful eye, they’re cleared for walking from Goldsborough House to the corner store, then to the bank and department store at the center of town.
