The Center replied, * “That’s the way the Russians operate - we may not know until the last minute, but we always proceed and plan as though clearance will be granted.” I had called to ask for a brief biography on each guest and was told that the Center had already requested that biographies be forwarded but that they hadn’t been received yet. The only mention of any of the guests to me thus far has been that the top rider of the Olympic Equestrian team and a retired Navy"admiral are among the 100 or so planning to attend the Citizens’ Sumxnity’We don’t know who the 10 Russians will be who come to Rappahannock County.
On Thursday, Jan. 29, in Washington, Va., we are planning a Rappahannock Glasnost in the evening. We have in mind an open forum, led by Dr. Denise Horton, to meet and chat with the Russians.
The Child Care and Learning Center has invited the Russians to tour the facility and share lunch with> the children. Trish and Bob Darby of Woodville have offered to do whatever they can. Mitzie and Bill Young have offered two dinners for 12 (they have twice been to.the USSR). Daphne Hutchinson His invited four for dinner in honor of her husband’s Russian grandparents.
This by no means completes the list of county residents who have generously offered to help entertain the Russians. Next week’s paper will be more specific, we hope. By then wetnay have an idea of who is coming and what public events have been planned. The Quaker meeting has the honor of being the-first ecumenical group to respond, having invited the Russians to brunch after attending meeting. If weather permits and the Rappahannock Hunt goes out, perhaps our guests can see the hunt off.
