Rep. Slaughter has sponsored a bill to allow tax breaks for savings accounts designated to cover health care in future years, but the bill has not yet won enough support to pass. He predicted more progress for the bill this year, but said it is still unlikely to gain enough votes to pass.
He noted that the Congressional agenda is bound to be influenced, as it always is, by the Presidential election in November, and said that he doubts if any far-reaching reforms or major new programs will be enacted before the election. “There’s a natural tendency to put off legislation and new programs until after the election. The election process requires more time.”
With campaigns occupying more and more time at every level, does the congressman favdr some limitations on time and money spent? “It i would be difficult to control either the length or the expenditures—and difficult to enforce limits.” But, he added, “I’m always willing to look at things, to see if something may be - workable.
“It’s good for the public to know what candidates are spending their money on in an election.”
