In Afghanistan, “we were opposed to the Soviet invasion, and we still do not approve. We believe that they should remove their military forces — it was completely unjustified.”
“I would like to see a breakthrough” in Nicaragua, he said. “United States policy should be to help other Central American countries in any endeavor which has a reasonable chance of success.”
Our goal, he added, is the achievement of free and fair elections in which the Nicaraguan people have the right to choose their own representatives, as well as the removal of all foreign military forces, advisors, and elimination of the support which the Soviet bloc has supplied to the Sandinista government.
In Haiti, where a recent attempt at free elections was sabotaged by apparently government-supported terrorists, Mr. Slaughter said he approves of the U. S. withdrawal of all aid until elections are held. “I hope that it will be effective — I don’t know about the chances.”
