The average time at Goldsborough House is two years downstairs and a year and a half to two years upstairs. Most of the residents then go on to unsupervised apartments but a few make an interim stop at 219 House in Orange, the Community Services Center’s only other supervised apartment program. “That’s when they’re ready to leave Goldsborough House but they’re not quite ready to be on their own. They need a little more time to polish their living skills,” Miss Johnson noted.
And just as with the initial acceptance to Goldsborough House, there are waiting lists every step of the way. “We have clients who have been evaluated and recommended -for admission. They - and their families - want to know when they can begin. We have clients who need to be in Goldsborough House or 219 House RIGHT NOW!” Miss Johnson emphasized. For the retarded adults who want independence and for the counselors who work with them, “that’s the slowest, most frustrating ; part of it all,” she added.
