Mrs. Lynn, the widow of the late Dr. William Lynn Jr., who died suddenly just days before the school opened last September, said the Class of 1989 “seemed to understand that part of the mantle of responsiblity the late headmaster wore was inherited by each member of the school body."
With respect for Dr. Lynn’s leadership, Wakefield’s valedictorian, Tobias Dengel, and salutatorian, Julie Whitworth, said that among the memories the Class of 1989 will carry into the future are the happy times they shared with Dr. Lynn.
His spirit, they said, will be present as the honor student march with their classmates and receive their diplomas. Eight Rappahannock County residents' will be among the 27 graduates, including Jennifer Anderson, Isabel Ford, Gafirielle Lee. Alexander Smith, Christine Smith, and three boarding students, Samer Hassan, Mikhel Mannil and Kerry Nuti, who have been living in the school lodge in Flint Hill.
Valedictorian Dengel, the son of Ottmar and Gisela Dengel of Front Royal, has attended Wakefield since the first grade.
In his 12 years at Wakefield, he has been honored with the William Lynn Award for Academic Excellence, has been an active participant inhe school’s sports program, including soccer, skiing, basketball and horseback riding. He was also been active in extracurricular projects, including serving as president of the student government association and editor of the award-winning school literary magazine, Talisman.
After a seven-week summer backpacking trip across Europe, Mr. Dengel will join other freshmen at the University of Pennsylvania, where he plans to pursue studies in technology and management.
The class salutatorian, Julie Whitworth, has spent three and a half very active years at Wakefield. She capped her academic accomplishments this spring by being selected as a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. ■ The daughter of F. Dixon and Kay Whitworth of Winchester, Miss Whitworth has been the recipient of numerous honors during her years in Wakefield's secondary program. She was honored with the Wakefield Leadership Award, its All-Around
