The fight has just begun for the new Republican nominee. The fierce primary may have ripped seams in the Republican Party of Virginia and some mending is necessary for the party to wear the robe of unity.
Although both of Mr. Coleman’s rivals have pledged their support, it may take some time before their Coleman-directed insults are etched from the minds of Virginians.
Moments after the results, the Democrats sent the message that they have their daggers ready. Lawrence H. Framme, chairman of the Democratic Party of Virginia, sent out a statement criticizing Mr. Coleman for running a “malicious campaign based on half-truths.” The statement indicated that the negative campaigning will not cease after the primary.
Mr. Coleman replied to the charges by saying that he looks forward to a "lively dialogue” with Mr. Wilder during the coming campaign.
