officers’ salaries. That’s not a fair comparison. Teachers’ salaries should be compared to employees’ salaries; constitutional officers’ salaries should be compared to school administrators, but the county employees’ salaries except for six positions are set by the state.”
Addressing the health insurance issue, she said the county contribution to health insurance now comes to $129 per month. Under the proposed budget it would be cut to $108, and if premiums go up 26 percent, as is expected, “we will be out $55 per month. The state is giving us a raise, and the county is taking it away.” She said that if the county paid the full premium for its employees’ health insurance, it would amount to one-half cent on the tax rate.
“There are only six employees paid by tax dollars without state reimbursement, and health insurance is the only benefit we receive,” she said.
Treasurer F ranees F oster added, “I want to thank the board for taking the time to listen to us, and I feel Mr. Massie owes us an apology.”
