The Rappahannock school system’s new teachers come from several states and have varying amounts of experience. As they gathered last Tuesday to begin pre-school meetings all were enthusiastic about the opportunity to work in a small school system.
The two new second grade teachers are not new to Rappahannock.
Kelly Brown grew up in Rappahannock and attended public schools through 10th grade. She transferred to Wakefield School in Huntly and graduated from there in 1988. She went to Sweet Briar College in Lynchburg and received her degree with a major in psychology this past spring.
During her junior year she spent a month working at the elementary school as an intern, working especially with the first-grade teachers. She said she is happy to have the chance to teach in her home county.
Marti Cannon grew up in Stafford County. She graduated from Mars Hill College near Ashville, N.C. and taught for five years, three in Stafford County and two in Culpeper County.
Then she took 12 years off from teaching to raise two children and serve as the postmaster in Castleton. “I’m ready to come back to teaching,” she said. “I think your expectations are more realistic when you have children of your own.”
