Carr and other representatives of the conservation groups were particularly critical of the Bush Administration policies and Virginia utilities for their role in polluting the air in the park and other areas in the state.
“Dan Quayle and his infamous Council on Competitiveness’ wants you to believe that we have to choose between clean air and jobs,” said Lee Bowen, chair of the Sierra Club’s Virginia chapter. “With aggressive programs designed to help Virginia business and households use energy more efficiently, we can have jobs and a cleaner environment.”
“Since 1986, the state has issued permits for 23 new electricity-generating facilities in Virginia, said Nancy Summers, past president of the Conservation Council of Virginia. ‘This is a lot of new power plants for une state. The 11 facilities permitted since 1989 will increase stationary source emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by more than 20 percent.”
