tools to accomplish protection of the national parks, but at present, we are failing miserably to protect the parks unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations. This is particularly so in the Shenandoah National Park.

“The Shenandoah National Park has the highest sulfur pollution of any park in the country, leading to drastic visibility impairment, acidification of streams and damage to vegetation,” he said.

The biggest danger threatening the park, said Carr, comes from sulphates, which are derived from the sulphur dioxide emitted by smokestacks. Sulphates account for 70 percent of the total decrease in visibility.

Sulphates are carried to earth via precipitation, causing the acidification of sensitive trout streams in the park. Thus “acid rain," or rather its components, have everything to do with the loss of summertime vistas.

Acid rain poses a series threat to park resources. Certain species such as mayflies — trout food sources — are declining. The loss of certain “in. dicator” species portends potentially dramatic changes in the park ecosystems.
