I was an innocent at the Lunch Bunch gathering on a recent Wednesday. I did not know that a speaker was going to be there. I knew something was amiss when I arrived because there were about 30 attendees. There are seldom more than 10 or 12. Another odd thing was that a total stranger in shirt-sleeves and tie greeted me at the door and said he was glad to see me again and he grabbed my hand. I did not know for sure, maybe I had met him somewhere before. I forget a lot of things unless they involve money or women.
I finally found a seat that was not taken and was told that the Honorable Congressman Wolf was to speak to us. My impression of him at that time was favorable. He had a pleasant demeanor, an impressive presence and a spontaneous smile. The sort of person one likes on sight. I did not even know what party he belonged to but I was ready to vote for him. He spoke of his background, childhood, education and why he decided to make his home in Virginia. He said that he loved Virginia and its people. I related to that and decided that he was prohably a moderate or even a liberal, perhaps even a Democrat.
Then he got confusing. He said that he had never bounced checks when it had never occurred to me that he had. He then mentioned several things he could not be charged with. I could not understand why he was saying these things, after all normal people do not do these things so it would not be noteworthy to gven mention them.
