The Virginia State government supported the idea of a national park within its boundaries throughout the years. Over 1.2 million state dollars went towards land acquisition. Governors Trinkle, Byrd and Peery led the legislature in the struggle to establish Shenandoah National Park. Barely two generations had passed since the end of the War Between the States.
