Indiana, Pa., went out of business in 1921. So buyers know the piece is at least 71 years old.
There are more than 525 lots to be sold. Most are individual pieces. A few are sets, such as a cream and sugar set or a group of four tumblers. The auction started at 10 a.m., It will last nearly six hours.
Bonnie and Earl Jewel are helping at the sale holding up each piece as it comes up for bid, carrying the pieces to the buyers. Otherwise, it is a family affair.
While Bill Payne conducts the auction, Mauri Payne keeps track of the numbers of the successful bidders listing for each item sold, the lot number, buyer number and sales price. Mr. Payne’s mother, Mary Payne, is the cashier and his father, Red Payne, handles concessions selling donuts and coffee early on, then hotdogs, sandwiches, soft drinks and pie later in the day. At other auctions, not this one, with all glass merchandise, son Chris and daughter Megan help out.
