Acquiring, the land for the park was a long and difficult process. Four hundred sixty-five families lived on park lands. Less than half owned their homes or any land at all. Darwin Lambert’s figures show total ownership by year round residents was about 7 percent of the park acreage. Over 80 percent of the tracts turned over to the state were owned by people who lived outside of the park.
