WARRENTON — The race for the 31st District seat in the House of Delegates has been pretty sedate heretofore, but with candidates from both the Republicans and Democrats having now been officially tapped by their respective parties, the atmosphere is already becoming charged.
During its convention last week, the GOP formally recognized Markham resident Jay Katzen to carry its flag into battle. Mr. Katzen will face incumbent Jerry Wood to represent nearly all of Fauquier (The Plains and Upperville precincts excluded), Rappahannock, and part of Warren counties in the General Assemble. i
The gloves came off early during the GOP meeting last Thursday, during a nomination seconding speech delivered by former Wood opponent Robert Darby of Woodville.
“I think a politician who makes promises has the obligation to keep them,” Mr. Darby said. “The incumbent ... does not subscribe to this point of view. As you well know, neither does his mentor in the White House.
“I wonder if you remember promises Mr. Wood made to the electorate during the last campaign. There were three of them. He promised he would not support any new taxes or tax increases.
“His second promise was to submit legislation to obtain impact fee authority for Fauquier and Rappahannock counties, and the last promise was to obtain legislation for Fauquier County to cap increases in, property taxes at five percent a year.
