Analysis of the cleaning material allegedly revealed the presence of gasoline and toluene. (Toluene is a colorless flammable liquid derived from coal tar or petroleum and used in high octane fuels, explosives, and as a solvent for gums and lacquers.)
The school was tested Friday with a photo-ionization detector for volatile organic matter. This machine is used to detect very small amounts of chemicals. No residue could be detected; all tests were negative.
Some parents were quite angry at the school administration for permitting the repairs while school was in session and children were present. Others felt that the officials had acted properly, and could not be held responsible for the actions of the roofers. Questions of liability and insurance were still to be resolved. An informational meeting sponsored by the Parent Teachers was scheduled for Tuesday evening. (See related story.)
There was little disagreement with Dr. Gangel’s statement, however, that “the roofing project will not start up again during the school year. And we’ll use a different roofing company.”
