Barrel Dump
Officials from the federal Envrironmental Protection Agency were on site at the barrel dump off Route 619 in Castleton Tuesday.
They have set up a hazardous material staging area, including several trailers, and are conducting further tests on the contents of the barrels before repackaging them in larger barrels for removal later this summer, according to an EPA official.
The barrels, which are believed to contain the pesticide malathion, paints and soap residue, were dumped on John B. Singleton’s property several years ago, according to neighbor Bill Laimbeer, who says he witnessed the dumping.
An investigation involving the Virginia State Police, EPA agents and the U.S. District Attorney’s office is underway, according to Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke.
Luke said suspects have been identified in the dumping, and he confirmed that the barrels were allegedly brought from outside the county and dumped on the Singleton property. He declined to provide specifics about the investigation or the subjects involved.
An official in the EPA regional office in Philadelphia confirmed that a criminal investigation is continuing, but declined further comment.
