“Ours will be a leadership of ideas, and it is on that basis, a battle of visions, that this election should be decided. Let’s start talking ideas, and the clear contrast between the two candidates,” Mr. Katzen said.
In other business before the GOP convention, three resolutions were presented for consideration. Two passed unopposed, while the third was defeated, 47-48.
“We call the General Assembly to amend Virginia’s constitution to provide for binding initiative and referendum," resolution committee chairman Harold Dutton said. “This will allow Virginia citizens to express their political will directly in the few instances where representative government does not respond.
“Many states, California and Colorado among them, have such provisions and they have not led to disaster, but have increased public input, participation, and interest in politics and policy. Our citizens deserve the same,” Mr. Dutton said. This resolution passed unanimously.
“We call on local and state legislators and executives to stop, then to reverse, and sharply to reduce the growth in size of local and state governments and taxes in Virginia,” Mr. Dutton read. This also passed.
“We strongly support term limits for executive and legislative elected positions at every level of government," Mr. Dutton offered, third, a resolution that was defeated.
