them any sizeable number of such abstentions might make it impossible for any of the three gubernatorial nominees to get a majority of the vote on the first ballot, thus setting up a second ballot. And a second ballot or later strategy is essential for Williams, who cannot win on a first ballot.
Conversely, a first ballot strategy is essential to Allen, who has long claimed to have more than 50 percent of the delegates committed to him. If he emerged from a first ballot with less than a majority, then an “emperor has no clothes” mindset could conceivably develop in the convention hall.
Whether there will be a hard battle over the proposed rules will depend on when they are presented to the convention Friday while atten- ■ dance is still relatively sparse, or Saturday when at least 12,000 folks | are expected. j
But one thing seems clear. The Republican nominee for governor ' cannot afford to leave the convention with any possibility of being perceived as nominated with less than a majority.
Yet unless that nominee can find a way to get away from the Richmond convention with a unified party behind him, any chance of victory in November will slip away.
